Rabies tests prompt park closures after beaver attacks at Cunningham Falls

Two beaver attacks at Cunningham Falls State Park in Maryland have led the DNR to test for rabies and close parts of the park. A 19-year-old fisherman was bitten, following a prior incident in which a 13-year-old boy was bitten; the beaver involved in the latest attack was captured and euthanized for rabies testing. Closures include the Houck Day Use Area, the adjacent boat ramp, and Big Hunting Creek above the lake; nighttime monitoring will continue to remove more beavers as authorities investigate a possible rabies outbreak in the local beaver population. The rest of the park remains open.

Brave Mom Saves 8-Year-Old Boy from Cougar Attack at Olympic National Park

A cougar attacked an 8-year-old boy while camping at Olympic National Park in Washington State, but the child's mother scared the animal away, resulting in minor injuries. Following the incident, visitors were evacuated from part of the park, and the Lake Angeles and Heather Park areas have been closed indefinitely. Law enforcement and wildlife officials are searching for the cougar, which will be euthanized and examined if found. This attack is one of several recent violent incidents involving wildlife in national parks, including bison attacks at Theodore Roosevelt and Yellowstone National Parks, as well as a fatal grizzly bear mauling in Yellowstone. Visitors are advised to be cautious and prepared for possible encounters with wildlife.
