People of color and those in lower income brackets seem to be disproportionately affected by food allergies, compared with people who are White and at higher incomes, a new study finds. The study found that Asian, Black and Hispanic people were much more likely to report having food allergies than White people. The study cannot determine why more people of color have food allergies, but it’s probably not an issue of genetics. Regardless of the reason, doctors should be aware that people of color are more likely to have food allergies and should screen for them.

People with darker skin complexions are at a lower risk of developing skin cancer due to sun exposure, but the risk is not zero. Many dermatologists say that Americans with darker complexions still face a real risk from the sun, including a higher risk of death if they do get melanoma. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that people with darker complexions use tinted mineral sunscreen with an SPF of 30. Melanoma tends to be deadlier for Black people, who often are diagnosed at later stages. Everyone, no matter their complexion, can get a sunburn, and sunscreen effectively defends against other types of skin cancer as well as sunburns, hyperpigmentation or discoloration, and eventual signs of aging caused by the sun.

The Impact of Book Bans on Education and Librarianship.

Nonprofit organization PEN America tracked school book bans in the 2022-23 school year and found that 874 unique titles were affected by 1,477 instances of individual book banning across 37 states, including Michigan. Most bans occurred to books by or about people of color or LGBTQ individuals. Michigan reported 18 book bans across five school districts, with 16 unique titles banned. The banned books include "Gender Queer: A Memoir" and "Push" by Sapphire, which is banned in three districts.

Attempted book bans in 2022 hit an "unparalleled" 20-year record, with more than 1,250 book challenges at school and public libraries, according to the American Library Association. A total of 2,571 unique book titles were targeted for censorship, with the majority written by or about members of the LGBTQ community and people of color.
