Rumors suggest the Galaxy S27 Ultra will drop the 3x telephoto to free space for a battery over 5,000mAh, add a 5x periscope zoom (with a possible camera-bar design) and Qi2 wireless charging, while a Galaxy S27 Pro may bridge gaps with the Ultra. Planned for early 2027, these changes appear to be Samsung’s response to upcoming iPhone 18 Pro/Max upgrades. Credibility is plausible but unconfirmed.
A leaked case suggests the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a redesigned horizontal camera bar to accommodate larger sensors, improved zoom with periscope technology, and better heat dissipation, signaling a major upgrade in mobile photography and videography capabilities aimed at professional users.
The first foldable phone from OnePlus, rumored to be named OnePlus V Fold, has been leaked in images. The device is expected to have a thin body and a periscope zoom lens, making it stand out from other foldable phones. The phone is likely to have a 50MP main camera and a 32MP selfie camera. It may also feature a 2K AMOLED display and ultrafast 100W charging. The release date is expected to be in August, shortly after the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. The phone is likely to be priced around $1500 for the 512GB version.
The rumored "close to 1-inch" primary camera sensor on the iPhone 15 Pro Max may be a custom-developed Sony IMX903, which is about 2x more expensive than the 50MP IMX989 in the Xiaomi 13 Ultra. The new periscope zoom lens is also expected to make its debut on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. While a larger sensor is a hardware upgrade, Apple's image processing needs to improve to compete with the likes of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max is rumored to have a periscope zoom lens that could offer up to 6x optical zoom, while the regular iPhone 15 Pro will stick with the 3x telephoto lens. The periscope lens uses folded optics to reflect light onto the lens, increasing the zoom power without increasing the size of the camera. The iPhone 15 Pro Max could also have a smaller camera bump than the regular iPhone 15 Pro. Apple is reportedly bringing on a second supplier for the periscope zoom component, indicating bullish demand for the Pro Max.
Rumors suggest that Samsung might remove the 3X zoom camera from the upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra, leaving only the periscope zoom lens. It is unclear if Samsung will use the same 10X periscope zoom or opt for a shorter zoom range. Other phones in the market use a shorter zoom range, which allows for a faster aperture and better low-light performance. It remains to be seen if Samsung is responding to user complaints about the bulkiness of the Galaxy Ultra series or if it has found a way to provide similar image quality without the dedicated 3X zoom camera.
