The Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen names spinach as the most pesticide-contaminated U.S. produce, with permethrin residues detected in over three-quarters of non-organic samples (permethrin is banned in the EU). Potatoes also show high contamination from chlorpropham (banned in the EU). The article recommends choosing organic when possible and using the Clean Fifteen as a guide to lower-exposure produce.
A six-month trial in western Uganda found that babies carried in permethrin-treated wraps had about a two-thirds reduction in malaria cases (0.73 vs 2.14 per 100 babies per week) compared with untreated wraps; safety signals showed a slightly higher rash rate but no withdrawals, and researchers see potential for local production and broader testing before rollout.
Mosquitoes are a nuisance and can transmit serious diseases, but there are ways to repel them. Bathing with coconut-scented soap, wearing permethrin-treated clothing, switching up your wardrobe to avoid preferred colors, using insect repellent containing DEET, and lawn treatments are effective ways to keep mosquitoes at bay. Citronella candles and plants, ultrasonic devices, and vitamin B12 supplements are not effective in repelling mosquitoes.
