South Korean study finds paper straws have higher environmental footprint than plastic
A South Korean government study concludes that paper straws have a significantly higher environmental impact than conventional plastic ones across most life cycle categories. The research, which analyzed four straw types, found that paper straws produce over six times the carcinogenic impact and double the acidification damage of plastic. While biodegradable and bio-based alternatives performed even worse, the study notes that all single-use straws are difficult to recycle due to their small size and coatings. Public opinion in South Korea largely favors plastic straws, with 87.5% of surveyed citizens expressing a dislike for paper alternatives.
