North American hantavirus case linked to cruise ship prompts health review

A Canadian passenger on the MV Hondius cruise tested positive for hantavirus, marking the first North American case linked to the voyage and the 10th overall from the ship’s outbreak. One of four Canadians who returned home received a presumptive positive and is undergoing further testing; the other three remain in isolation, with two elderly travelers hospitalized in Victoria. Officials say the overall risk to the Canadian public remains low, as hantavirus is typically rodent-borne, though the Andes strain has shown limited human-to-human transmission in early illness. Isolation rules are being reassessed and investigations continue.

"Salmonella Outbreak: Cantaloupe-Related Deaths Reach Eight"

The total deaths linked to a cantaloupe-related salmonella outbreak have reached eight, with three deaths in the U.S. and five in Canada. Health agencies in both countries have identified "Malichita" or "Rudy" brand cantaloupes as the potential source of the illnesses, and several suppliers are believed to have distributed the fruit. Recalls have been issued for various cantaloupe products, and consumers are advised not to consume any recalled or pre-cut cantaloupe. The outbreak has resulted in 230 cases in the U.S. and 129 in Canada, with a significant number of hospitalizations reported. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

Salmonella Outbreak from Raw Pet Food Sickens Canadians and Animals

Canadian officials have traced a Salmonella outbreak to raw pet food and possible contact with cattle. Since July 2020, 40 people have been confirmed to be infected with the extensively drug-resistant Salmonella I outbreak strain. Thirteen patients required hospitalization, and almost half of the cases involved children aged 5 and younger. The outbreak strain has also been found in sick dogs and cattle, with some animals dying. The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends against feeding raw pet food to pets, especially in households with young children or individuals with compromised immune systems. They also advise proper hygiene practices when handling pets and contact with cattle.
