Bolivia Declares State of Emergency Over Persistent Protests
Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has declared a state of emergency after weeks of protests that have disrupted supplies and paralyzed large parts of the country. The measure would empower authorities to clear roadblocks, with Congress required to approve within 72 hours. Protesters—led by miners, farmers and Indigenous groups—demand Paz’s resignation, reinstatement of fuel subsidies, and rollback of austerity. Paz, who says the unrest is a destabilization attempt, announced a deal with the Bolivian Workers’ Confederation, but roadblocks persist and clashes have caused deaths and arrests.
