EU Summit Ends in Stalemate as Italy, Denmark, and Poland Fail to Pass Tougher Migration Language

At the October 16, 2026, EU leaders' summit in Brussels, Italy, Denmark, and Poland attempted to harden the bloc's stance on irregular migration but failed to secure unanimous support. The draft conclusions, which linked migration to crime and criticized 'pull factors,' were blocked by opposition from Spain, France, and Luxembourg. French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the debate as 'very politicized' and ineffective, while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended his country's regularization of 600,000 migrants. The summit concluded without a final agreement on migration, leaving the issue unresolved for future sessions.

Madrid warns of countermeasures as Italy extends Ceuta border controls

Spain warned it would impose proportionate counter-measures if Italy does not lift border controls introduced after thousands of migrants crossed into Ceuta from Morocco; Italy has partially suspended Schengen with Spain and will maintain checks at least until mid-August, arguing the measures prevent onward movement, while Madrid calls the move unjustified and says most migrants have already returned to Morocco, spotlighting ongoing EU migration tensions.
