"NOAA Warns of Impending Solar Storm and Geomagnetic Risk"
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted that an M-class solar flare can erupt today, which could be accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CME) capable of bringing a powerful solar storm to Earth. The extreme ultraviolet radiation from the explosion can cause temporary disruptions for low-frequency radio waves, affecting operations of aviators, drone pilots, amateur radio operators, small ships and boats, and others. The biggest threat is from a possible solar storm if a CME cloud comes rushing towards Earth, which can damage small satellites, impact mobile networks, GPS, and even pose a threat to ground-based electronics and power grids. The Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) is a pair of twin spacecraft that were launched in 2006 to study the Sun and its effects on Earth.
