Researchers at the University of Basel have discovered that the way the brain processes unexpected stimuli evolves with age, becoming more efficient in distinguishing between important and unimportant surprises, thus conserving energy. Their study on mice revealed that different brain regions, such as the inferior colliculus, auditory thalamus, and primary auditory cortex, mature at varying rates, with the cerebral cortex developing last. Experiences, particularly with sounds, are crucial for the development of the brain's surprise response. This research enhances our understanding of neurodevelopment and predictive coding in the brain.
