Court Keeps Trump-Era Tariffs Alive, Hinting at More Trade Moves

The Supreme Court declined to hear challenges to Trump's 2018 tariffs on Chinese imports under the 1974 Trade Act, leaving those duties in place and potentially enabling the administration to pursue new tariffs to replace many of the emergency measures tried last year. Critics say the tariffs cost U.S. consumers about $75 billion annually; the administration has floated up to 12.5% duties on imports from about 60 countries, which could offset projected revenue losses. Opponents argue the Trade Act modification lacks clear limits on expanding tariffs, while supporters say the law permits responses to evolving trade situations as long as changes aren’t radically transformative; if Trump pursues more tariffs, the issue could return to the Court.
