Mars' Climate Shift: Chinese Rover Uncovers Ancient Changes
China's Zhurong Mars rover has discovered evidence of a significant climate shift on Mars 400,000 years ago. The rover's investigation of sand dunes in Utopia Planitia revealed dark ridges, known as transverse aeolian ridges (TARs), formed on top of the dunes at a different angle than the wind-blown dunes. This finding suggests that the wind direction in the lower mid-latitudes of Mars changed as the planet's last major ice age came to an end. The ice age on Mars was caused by changes in the planet's obliquity, or angle of rotation, which affected its climate. The discovery provides insights into Mars' ancient climate and landscape evolution.
