Ultrasound breakthrough saves twins from TTTS in the womb
A world‑first trial used high‑powered, targeted ultrasound to seal tiny placental blood vessels in twin‑to‑twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a non‑invasive alternative to surgery. The procedure helped Nancy and Margo (Brioney Garrett’s identical twins) balance blood flow and be born healthy at about 34 weeks, now four years old. The study enrolled 10 women (20 twins total); about half needed additional treatment, and 12 of the 20 twins survived. While promising, researchers say larger studies are needed before this approach can be offered more widely.
