Melbourne’s 10,500-Hectare Sewage Plant Now Hosts 300 Bird Species, Including Siberian Migrants
Melbourne’s Werribee sewage treatment plant, established in 1897 to address cholera and typhoid, has evolved into a 10,500-hectare Ramsar-listed wetland. It processes 500 megaliters of sewage daily and supports over 300 bird species, including red-necked stints migrating 12,000 kilometers from Siberia. The site requires permits for access due to its dual role as active infrastructure and protected habitat.
