Iran faces debate on preemptive strikes as US escalation widens
Iranian officials and hardliners are debating whether to shift from a retaliatory approach to preemptive actions amid renewed US attacks. The fighting has included strikes on Larak Island and US bases in Jordan and Bahrain, with Hormuz at the center of military planning, while diplomacy via Islamabad and other mediators seeks a path back to talks. At the same time, Iran’s economy is being squeezed by sanctions and disrupted trade, complicating decisions about maintaining or recalibrating its military capabilities and national security.
