Blue Companions May Forge Black-Hole Seeds Behind JWST's Little Red Dots

A new JWST study proposes that the mysterious “little red dots” seen in the early universe often have nearby blue companions whose ultraviolet light triggers gas clouds to collapse directly into black holes, skipping the usual star-formation route. Examining 83 LRDs, researchers found that about 36 host a blue companion, suggesting these red dots may arise from compact star clusters or tiny early galaxies; this could help explain the seeds of supermassive black holes and the rapid formation of massive galaxies, though further observations are needed to map the companions’ separations.
