BYU women's basketball team continued their undefeated streak against Utah Valley University (UVU) with a dominant 76-36 victory at the Marriott Center. Professor Joshua Lothringer from Utah Valley University has helped discover the presence of carbon dioxide on an exoplanet located 700 lightyears away from Earth. Using the James Webb Space Telescope, Lothringer and an international team of scientists observed a distant star and measured its light over time to detect the presence of an exoplanet. The exoplanet, named Hot Jupiter WASP-39b, is about the size of Jupiter and has a temperature of approximately 2,000 degrees. This research contributes to the understanding of exoplanet atmospheres and paves the way for future exploration of smaller, potentially habitable planets.
Utah collegians took three of the top four places in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA West Preliminaries track and field meet, with Everlyn Kemboi of Utah Valley University winning the event. BYU's Ashton Riner advanced to the NCAA championships in the javelin, while Claire Seymour and Meghan Hunter advanced to the quarterfinals in the 800-meter run. Mark Madsen, head coach of Utah Valley University's basketball team, may be leaving for a head coaching position at Cal after leading his team to their first-ever trip to the NIT Final Four. Madsen's wife is pregnant and overdue, and he has a deal to not be gone at night after her due date. Cal's head coaching position would pay about five times what UVU can offer. Madsen has been a wanted man since he stepped foot on UVU's campus, and even before.
Utah Valley University President Astrid Tuminez was shown multiple times during the ESPN2 broadcast of UVU’s NIT quarterfinals game against Cincinnati cheering for the team, with pompoms in hand. Tuminez is known for being a cheerleader for her university and has used pompoms to celebrate a variety of happenings on campus during her tenure. UVU won the game 74-68 and will face UAB in the NIT semifinals.
