"China's Cutting-Edge Telescope Hunts for Supernovae"
China's Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST), nicknamed 'Mozi', has released its first image of the Andromeda galaxy. The 2.5-meter telescope, located on the Tibetan Plateau, will scan the skies for fast-moving phenomena such as stellar explosions and near-Earth objects. Its main goal is to find tens of thousands of exploding stars, known as supernovae, including around 100 each year within days of their explosive deaths. The WFST will also provide a deeper view of the Milky Way and its features, helping astronomers unravel questions about the Universe's expansion and the formation of galaxies, black holes, and chemical elements.
