Survivors account for 28,913 cases, outpacing responders’ 28,131, and the rise includes rare cancers such as thymus and neuroendocrine tumors; 67% of the program’s 145,275 members are certified for at least one cancer, and post-9/11 illness deaths exceed 9,400, underscoring the ongoing toll and the push for enrollment and early detection.

Karen Smith, who got uterine cancer from toxic chemicals near Ground Zero, is one of the first women to be certified by the World Trade Center Health Program, which added uterine cancer to the list of illnesses caused by 9/11 in January 2023.
