"COP28 Calls for Global Tripled Renewable Energy Pledge by 2030"

The presidency of the upcoming COP28 climate summit, along with two renewable energy organizations, is urging governments to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 in order to prevent global warming from exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius. A joint report by the United Arab Emirates' COP28 presidency, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and the Global Renewables Alliance states that renewable energy capacity needs to reach over 11,000 GW by 2030. While major economies like China, the United States, and India have already agreed to this goal, reaching a consensus among the nearly 200 countries attending COP28 will be challenging. European nations and climate-vulnerable states argue that a renewable energy deal must be accompanied by a commitment to phase out CO2-emitting fossil fuels, a stance that faces resistance from fossil fuel-reliant economies like Saudi Arabia and Russia.
