The Genetic Link Between Fertility and Lifespan

A new study published in the journal Science Advances supports the theory proposed by American evolutionary biologist George Williams in 1957 that genetic mutations enhancing fertility can also lead to bodily damage and shorter lifespans. Researchers analyzed data from the UK Biobank and found that genetic variations linked to fertility were also associated with a reduced lifespan. Furthermore, these variants were more likely to influence longevity than variants unrelated to reproduction. The study suggests that aging is a side effect of natural selection's impact on fertility, and the presence of reproduction-boosting variants has increased over time. Despite increased life expectancy due to improved healthcare and nutrition, the influence of these variants on lifespan remains significant.
