A study published in the journal Science Advances supports the theory proposed by American evolutionary biologist George Williams in 1957 that genetic mutations enhancing fertility can also lead to bodily damage later in life. Researchers analyzed DNA from half a million volunteers in the UK Biobank and found hundreds of mutations linked to increased fertility in young individuals that were also associated with a shorter lifespan. The study suggests that aging is a side effect of natural selection's impact on fertility, and the findings indicate that this evolutionary process may still be ongoing. Despite the increase in life expectancy, the identified mutations still have a small influence on longevity.
