Trillions of periodical cicadas, emerging every 13 or 17 years, are set to invade parts of the United States in what experts are calling "cicada-geddon." The upcoming emergence of Brood XIX in the Southeast and Brood XIII in the Midwest will bring about a mass invasion of these unique insects, with numbers averaging around 1 million per acre over hundreds of millions of acres across 16 states. While the cicadas may be a spectacle to behold, they can pose a nuisance to young trees and some fruit crops.
