The Connection Between Bird Song Complexity and Problem-Solving Skills

A study conducted by researchers at Rockefeller University suggests that the ability of birds to learn complex songs is associated with their problem-solving skills. The study found that species classified as open-ended learners, capable of incorporating new song motifs throughout their lives, performed better in problem-solving tests. However, there was no specific pattern observed in other intelligence tests, such as self-control and associative learning. The findings highlight the complexity of intelligence and suggest that problem-solving abilities may have emerged as a side effect of evolution selecting for expanded song capabilities in birds.
