Ancient Supermassive Black Hole Discovered by Webb Telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope has discovered an active supermassive black hole within the galaxy CEERS 1019, which is more than 13 billion years old. This black hole is smaller than others detected in the early universe, weighing in at about 9 million solar masses. The ability of the Webb telescope to detect such a dim and distant black hole is a significant achievement. Researchers also found two other lightweight black holes nearby, formed about 1 billion years after the big bang. The discovery of these galaxies and black holes may lead to breakthroughs in understanding star formation and galaxy evolution throughout cosmic history.
