Dazzling Fireball Outshines Full Moon in Spectacular Video

A brilliant fireball streaked across the southeastern United States skies, captured on film by stargazers in the area. The fireball, likely a comet fragment, was around 1 foot in diameter and weighed close to 75 pounds. It entered Earth's atmosphere about 50 miles above Kentucky and traveled roughly southeast at 37,000 miles per hour before disintegrating 30 miles above Virginia. The fireball produced an explosion equivalent to around 2 tons of TNT and was 5 times brighter than the full moon. The identity of the comet responsible for the fragment remains unknown.
