NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has detected light from TRAPPIST-1b, a rocky exoplanet orbiting a small red star, and found that it is almost certainly uninhabitable due to its scorching temperature of about 450 degrees Fahrenheit and lack of atmosphere. The discovery is a record-breaking first for the JWST, which has been steadily producing newsworthy results since its launch. The TRAPPIST-1 system is "the best targets we have for looking at the atmospheres of rocky planets," according to one of the study's co-authors.
