A series of four supermoons, including a rare blue moon, will occur during the summer of 2022. Full moons become supermoons when they coincide with perigree, the moment when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its roughly 28-day orbit cycle. The second of August’s two supermoons will also be a blue moon, which is a term that describes the occurrence of a second full moon in one calendar month.
