Unraveling the Mystery: Where Did Hundreds of Stars Go?

Astronomers have discovered that around 100 stars have disappeared from view in the last 70 years, leaving them puzzled. The Vanishing and Appearing Sources during a Century of Observations (VASCO) project compared historical sky images from 1949 to more recent data and found that approximately 24,000 candidates initially appeared to have vanished. Further analysis narrowed it down to around 100 point sources that had disappeared. Possible explanations include optical afterglow from gamma-ray bursts or fast radio bursts, failed supernovae, asteroids, gravitational lensing, or even the hypothetical presence of alien life. However, the exact cause remains unknown.
