"Unusual 'Blob' Emitting Intense Radiation Targets Earth in 76-Minute Intervals"

Scientists have discovered that regular bursts of high-energy gamma-rays emanating from the vicinity of the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way are coming from a spinning blob of gas. The gamma-ray pulses, detected in 2021, cannot originate from within the black hole itself due to its event horizon. The researchers used data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope to identify a periodicity in the emissions, occurring approximately every 76.32 minutes. They concluded that the gamma-rays and X-rays are emitted by a swirling blob of gas moving at around 30% the speed of light. This finding provides insights into the environments surrounding supermassive black holes.
