Deep Ocean Heat Waves Pose Catastrophic Threat, Scientists Warn

Heat waves are occurring at the bottom of the ocean, which can be catastrophic for marine life, including commercially fished species. These "bottom marine heat waves" last longer than surface heat waves and are a global phenomenon. The ocean has absorbed 90% of the excess heat from global warming, resulting in a 50% increase in surface marine heat waves in the past decade. Warm bottom water temperatures have previously been linked to an increase in invasive lionfish populations and coral bleaching. The causes of these heat waves are not yet fully understood, but changes in ocean currents and upwelling may be factors.
