Rats Harness Imagination to Navigate Virtual Environments

Researchers have discovered that rats have the ability to navigate through a space they have previously explored using their thoughts alone, suggesting that they possess some form of imagination. By employing a brain-machine interface and virtual reality technology, the study found that rats could use their brain activity to navigate through a virtual environment and reach a goal. The activity in the rats' hippocampus, a region associated with mental mapping, was recorded and translated into specific locations within the virtual environment. This research suggests that rats possess a fundamental building block of imagination, similar to humans.
