Maine's lack of dinosaur fossils can be attributed to the extensive glaciation during the Pleistocene Epoch, which scoured away most fossils closer to the surface. Prior to that, constant erosion and the predominance of granite, a rock type not conducive to preserving fossils, further limited the fossil record. The state's oldest fossils date back to the Devonian period or earlier, with the most recent ones being around 12,000 years old and consisting mainly of marine invertebrate shells, along with a few mammal fossils. While there were likely dinosaurs in Maine, evidence of their presence has been erased by geological processes.
