Revolutionary Telescope Design: Diffractive Lenses Outshine Mirrors, Leaving James Webb Behind

Astronomers are developing a new kind of space telescope called the Nautilus Space Observatory, which replaces large, heavy mirrors with thin, lightweight diffractive lenses. These lenses, which focus light using etchings and patterns on their surface, are cheaper and easier to produce than mirrored telescopes. The Nautilus Space Observatory could collect a hundred times more light than the James Webb Space Telescope, allowing astronomers to study exoplanets in greater detail and search for signs of extraterrestrial life. The lenses can be made en masse, are easier to assemble and align in space, and a network of individual telescopes could be launched into orbit to create a powerful observatory.
