SpaceX Satellites: Radiation and Near-Misses Threaten Observations

Astronomers are frustrated with SpaceX's Starlink satellite constellation, as it is causing interference in their observations. A new study reveals that the satellites are emitting "unintended" radiation from their electronics, which is being picked up by telescopes designed for deep space observations. The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) telescope in the Netherlands detected this radiation from nearly 50 Starlink satellites. While SpaceX is not violating any laws, there are concerns about the impact of this radiation on astronomy, especially as the number of satellites in constellations continues to grow. Astronomers are in discussions with SpaceX to find ways to minimize the interference.
