Jupiter's Massive Thunderstorms Threaten to Erase Giant Band

New images reveal two massive white thunderstorms on Jupiter's Southern Equatorial Belt, potentially altering its rusty brown color. These storms, captured by astrophotographer Michael Karrer, are large enough to engulf Earth and may produce green lightning due to atmospheric ammonia. Although not as enduring as the Great Red Spot, these storms could temporarily dilute the belt's color, a phenomenon observed in past decades. Jupiter's recent opposition makes it an excellent target for amateur astronomers.
