SpaceX is exploring the possibility of repurposing its Starship vehicle into a commercial space station, with NASA providing technical expertise. This comes as NASA seeks alternatives for a government-owned research lab in low-Earth orbit after the International Space Station is decommissioned in 2030. Although SpaceX was not selected for a funded space station development agreement in 2021, the company's Starship concept will be part of NASA's Collaborations for Commercial Space Capabilities program. The program aims to advance private sector development of emerging products and services, potentially available to NASA in five to seven years.
