The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has probed TRAPPIST-1b, one of the seven rocky, Earth-sized planets orbiting the red dwarf star TRAPPIST-1. The study did not detect signs of an atmosphere around TRAPPIST-1b, but it did find "ghost signals" in the starlight that could help prevent future studies from drawing incorrect conclusions about exoplanet atmospheres. TRAPPIST-1b receives four times more radiation than Earth and has a surface temperature between 120 and 220 degrees Celsius, making it uninhabitable. However, the study did not rule out the possibility of a thin atmosphere on the planet. Understanding how the host star affects observations is crucial for future studies of the other planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system.
