North Korea has launched its first operational "tactical nuclear attack submarine" and assigned it to the fleet that patrols the waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stated that arming the navy with nuclear weapons was an urgent task and promised to transfer more underwater and surface vessels equipped with tactical nuclear weapons to the naval forces. The submarine, named Hero Kim Kun Ok, will serve as one of the core offensive means of North Korea's naval force. North Korea plans to convert existing submarines into nuclear-armed attack submarines and accelerate the development of nuclear-powered submarines. The launch comes ahead of North Korea's 75th anniversary and amid reports of Kim planning to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss weapons supplies.
