NHL Unveils 2028 World Cup of Hockey With Three Host Cities
The NHL announced at its Palm Beach GM meetings that the 2028 World Cup of Hockey will be staged in February 2028 with Prague, Calgary and Edmonton as hosts, marking the event's return since 2016. The league will partner with IIHF to ensure participation of players from outside the NHL and will use NHL rules (including five-on-five overtime) instead of international rules, with the round robin split between Prague and Calgary and the semifinals/finals in Edmonton, occurring mid-season during 2027-28. Russia’s involvement remains uncertain amid IIHF exclusions, and the NHL is weighing format options and potential expansions as it positions the event ahead of the 2030 Olympics.
