GLP-1 Weight Drugs May Weigh on Fat Use, Not Just Appetite
A new mouse study suggests long-term weight loss from GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy may rely not only on suppressing appetite but also on energy mobilization governed by AgRP hunger neurons. When these neurons were disrupted in female mice, semaglutide still reduced eating, but fat mobilization and the overall weight-loss effect weakened, leading to weight regain within about two weeks. Normal-functioning neurons maintained weight loss, and disruptions involving Sirt1 signaling partially reversed the effect. Results are preclinical and observed mainly in female mice, so more research is needed to understand implications for humans.
