AMD Acquires World Labs for $8.2 Billion to Challenge Nvidia in AI
AMD has agreed to acquire San Francisco-based AI research firm World Labs in an all-stock transaction valued at $8.2 billion. The deal, expected to close by the end of 2026, brings renowned AI researcher Fei-Fei Li into AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. World Labs specializes in 'world models' that generate 3D environments from text and video, a technology critical for robotics and simulation. This acquisition is AMD's second-largest ever, following its 2022 purchase of Xilinx, and aims to align its hardware roadmap with emerging AI model requirements while challenging its primary rival, Nvidia.
