Bluewater Lake State Park: A Southwest Oasis for Camping, Hiking, and Tiger Muskies

Bluewater Lake State Park in New Mexico sits roughly 100 miles from Albuquerque and 230 miles from Flagstaff, offering 149 campsites (electrical and non-electric), water, restrooms, and showers, plus options for primitive camping. Visitors can camp, hike two trails (Bluewater Lake Creek Hike with steep inclines and Bluewater Dam Trail, easy), bird watch for species like hummingbirds and egrets, and enjoy water activities such as kayaking, boating, swimming, and paddleboarding. The lake is notable for rare tiger muskies, hybrids introduced to control invasives, along with other species including cutthroat and rainbow trout, catfish, walleye, bass, and more. A New Mexico fishing license is required. The park makes for a strong road-trip stop between Albuquerque and Flagstaff.

"From Viral Video to Memoir and TV Show: The Story of Central Park Birder Christian Cooper"

Christian Cooper, the Black birder who went viral after a white woman falsely accused him of threatening her in Central Park, has turned his experience into a memoir and a TV show. Cooper's memoir, "Better Living through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World," is out this week, and his show, "Extraordinary Birder with Christian Cooper," premieres on Nat Geo Wild on Saturday. Cooper hopes to use his platform to spread the gospel of birding and inspire young Black kids to take up the hobby.
