Preliminary human tissue and mouse studies suggest Porphyromonas gingivalis, a gum-disease bacterium, may contribute to calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS) by triggering IL-1β–driven inflammation. The bacterium was more often found in calcified heart valves, and in mice, exposure to the bacteria increased valve calcium buildup and signs of stenosis, which were reduced by antibiotics or by blocking the IL-1β inflammatory pathway. While these findings show an association and a potential mechanism, they do not prove causation in people; researchers are pursuing clinical studies and emphasize that maintaining oral health could benefit overall cardiovascular health.
