Arizona State Dominates Big 12, Eyes College Football Playoffs

Arizona State secured a spot in the College Football Playoff after defeating Iowa State 45-19 in the Big 12 title game, despite being ranked No. 15. The Sun Devils, who joined the Big 12 this year, hope for a first-round bye, contingent on other conference outcomes, particularly the ACC title game between Clemson and SMU. Controversy Erupts as Alabama Ranks Above Miami in CFP Standings

Miami's athletic director Dan Radakovich and ACC commissioner Jim Phillips criticized the College Football Playoff Committee for ranking Alabama ahead of Miami, despite Miami having a better record. Alabama is ranked 11th, while Miami is 12th, potentially excluding Miami from the playoff field. The committee cited Alabama's stronger record against top 25 teams as a reason. Both Miami and Alabama have no more games to influence their standings, and the final rankings could change based on upcoming conference championship outcomes.

ACC Urges CFP to Reevaluate Miami's Surprising Drop in Rankings

The ACC is urging the College Football Playoff committee to reconsider Miami's ranking after the Hurricanes fell to No. 12, potentially missing out on the 12-team tournament despite a 10-2 record. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips expressed disappointment, arguing Miami deserves better, while coach Mario Cristobal highlighted the team's strong season and close losses. Miami's exclusion is contentious as Alabama, with three losses, secured the No. 11 spot. The Hurricanes' case is weakened by not facing ranked teams and defensive struggles, despite leading in offensive stats.
