
Autologous CiPSC Islet Transplant Brings Insulin Independence to Type 1 Diabetes Patient
A 25-year-old woman with lifelong Type 1 diabetes received an autologous transplant of chemically induced pluripotent stem cell–derived pancreatic islet cells, transplanted into the abdominal wall in 2023. Within 75 days she stopped needing insulin and achieved non-diabetic HbA1c with over 98% time in range, marking a first proof-of-concept for patient-derived islet cells. However, the result comes from a single case with prior immunosuppression from a liver transplant, and durability and broader applicability require more patients and longer follow-up.
