US Joins Global Effort to Phase Out Coal Power at COP28
The United States has committed to not building any new coal plants and phasing out existing ones as part of its green agenda. U.S. Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry made the announcement at the COP28 climate change summit in Dubai. The move is aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and aligns the U.S. with the Powering Past Coal Alliance. Currently, coal accounts for just under 20% of U.S. electricity, but federal clean energy tax credits and regulations are already leading to the closure of coal plants. A report predicts that 173 coal plants will close by 2030 and another 54 by 2040.
