Remote work, not AI, is delaying grads’ entry into the job market
A New York Fed study cited by CBS MoneyWatch says remote work accounts for about 64% of the jump in unemployment among young college graduates since the pandemic, as managers’ ability to train and mentor distributed workers is hindered and firms hesitate to hire fresh grads on distributed teams. Economists say AI has not meaningfully affected the overall labor market, though tech layoffs linked to AI exist and some analyses note a small uptick in unemployment for less-experienced workers.
