New Wearable Enables Around-the-Clock Glucose and Ketone Monitoring for Diabetes

The FDA has authorized Abbott Diabetes Care’s Libre Duo 10 Day Continuous Dual Glucose Ketone Monitoring System for people aged 2 and older with diabetes, making it the first US wearable to continuously monitor ketones and the first system globally to track glucose and ketones together. The device measures both analytes under the skin every minute, streams readings to a smartphone, and can send alerts for rising ketone levels. Supported by six studies with over 600 participants, it identified elevated ketones before the onset of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), potentially enabling earlier intervention and sick-day management. Ketone readings should be interpreted with glucose data and symptoms. This breakthrough device is particularly relevant as roughly 40 million Americans have diabetes, and clinicians will need guidance on sick-day protocols and insulin adjustments. Reference data from the FDA and CDC are cited in the release.

Kerala Reports U.S.-Prevalent JN.1 Subvariant of Omicron Spreading Ahead of Holidays

Kerala has reported the presence of the JN.1 subvariant of the Omicron variant, raising concerns about COVID-19. However, experts have stated that there is no need to worry at this moment, emphasizing the importance of continuous monitoring. The JN.1 subvariant, part of the BA.2.86 lineage, was first detected in Luxembourg and has immune-evasion properties. While it exhibits symptoms such as fever, coughing, and nasal congestion, there have been no severe cases or deaths associated with it. The World Health Organization classifies it as a "notable descendent lineage" with potential increased transmissibility, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently reports no evidence of increased public health risk or severity compared to other variants.

"The Revolutionary Doctor's Office: When the Stethoscope Becomes the Wearer"

Northwestern University has developed tiny wireless sensors that stick to a patient's skin to continuously monitor sounds from the heart, lungs, and GI tract. The devices contain microphones that capture noise for cancellation, and the collected audio is wirelessly transmitted to clinicians for analysis. This innovation could revolutionize healthcare by providing continuous monitoring and analysis of patient sounds, although the cost may be a factor in widespread adoption.

Revolutionary Sensor Tracks Glucose Levels in Sweat Long-Term

Researchers at Penn State have developed a wearable sensor that can monitor glucose levels in sweat continuously for up to three weeks. The sensor, made from a laser-modified graphene nanocomposite material, also tracks body temperature and pH levels. Previous attempts at sweat-based glucose monitoring have been limited by low biomarker concentration levels and variability in factors such as pH and temperature. The new sensor addresses these challenges and offers a low-cost, convenient, and accurate platform for continuous analysis of sweat, with potential applications in personalized medicine and precision nutrition.
