Prednisone’s widespread use masks severe systemic risks

Prednisone, a top-40 U.S. prescription used by roughly 10 million people annually, offers rapid relief for inflammation but carries significant risks. While effective for short-term flare-ups of conditions like asthma or arthritis, its mechanism mimics cortisol, triggering metabolic, neurological, and cardiovascular changes. Experts warn that long-term use can lead to bone density loss, mood disorders, and adrenal crisis upon discontinuation. Medical guidelines increasingly favor steroid-sparing strategies, recommending brief, low-dose courses to mitigate these dangers.

The Impact of Diet on Cancer Growth: Insights and Strategies.

A keto diet in mice slowed the growth of cancer cells but also promoted the wasting that is often associated with late-stage cancer, according to a new study. Cachexia can lead to a termination of treatment as a patient becomes too weak to withstand cancer drugs any longer. The study suggests that augmenting a keto diet with corticosteroids may delay the development of cachexia. However, caution is warranted as steroids are powerful drugs and have many effects. A true keto diet, such as the type used in the study, should only be considered under the supervision of a physician.

Intraocular Steroids Effective for Treating Chronic Inflammatory Eye Conditions.

A clinical trial funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI) has found that repeat treatment with corticosteroid injections is the most effective therapy for persistent or recurrent uveitis-related macular edema, a major cause of vision loss in people with uveitis. The corticosteroid treatment achieved greater reductions in retinal swelling and was the only therapy in the study that improved vision. The study compared three treatments for uveitis-related macular edema: an additional intraocular corticosteroid injection, an injection of the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) drug ranibizumab, or an injection of the anti-inflammatory drug methotrexate.
